Beeswax Candles to Purify Air

Considering the sky we are under lately, I am doing anything and everything to keep lil' muachi comfortable and safe from the haze.

I've recently learnt of a little known fact about beeswax candles. They actually purify the air! Beeswax candles are known to draw pollutants out of the air. These candles are not easily found in Malaysia. I did see one in a gift shop but obviously it's not pure beeswax as it felt like plastic.

I am endorsing these candles from twotreehouse. Ok so it is made by a "trusted source" of mine:) But I am currently using them. I feel comforted knowing that it is clearing the air somewhat and it smells of natural honey. yumm

twotreehouse beehive candles are made of 100% pure Australian beeswax. They are non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. These candles are handmade in Melbourne.

Here is their official press release:

twotreehouse premium gift products are Australian handmade using carefully selected quality ingredients and are free from chemicals, parabens and animal testing. twotreehouse promotes ecological sustainability and responsible living.

twotreehouse is proud to introduce our 100% pure Australian beeswax candle into the Asian market. These cute candles come in an appropriately shaped beehive design, glows beautifully in the dark and burns for approximately 25 hours.

Beeswax candles purifies the air
Air contains billions of electrically charged particles called ions. Ions act upon our capacity to absorb and utilize oxygen, and therefore, have a powerful effect on our well-being, which can affect our mood, energy and health. Positive ions are loaded with pollution and allergens that are drawn to them and suspended in the air. 100% beeswax candles are known to release negative ions that remove the odours, pollens, smoke, dust, viruses and other allergens and hazards from positive ions, allowing them to drop harmlessly to the ground. These candles are considered beneficial to people with chemical sensitivities, asthma and allergies.

twotreehouse beeswax candles are paraffin free
Paraffin is a major ingredient in most conventional candles and releases dangerous carcinogenic chemicals when burned. These fumes can contribute to serious respiratory issues like asthma.  twotreehouse candles are made from 100% beeswax obtained from sustainable bee farms in Australia. Our candles are also made with pure cotton wicks, unlike poor quality scented candles with wicks that may release dangerous amounts of lead when burned.

twotreehouse 100% beeswax candles are natural and safe
Our candles are extremely suitable for nurseries as they are completely pure and are virtually smoke-free. These candles are as natural as it comes and releases a lovely light scent of honey as it burns, which is very soothing and calming. They burn very slowly with a warm glow and purify the air around it. Beeswax candles are ecologically and environmentally friendly, sustainable, and natural.

twotreehouse gift products uses natural ingredients and are sold at respectable gift shops around Melbourne.

twotreehouse beeswax candles are currently available for delivery within Malaysia. They are retailing at RM60 per candle.

For orders, please email your request to contactus.asia@twotreehouse.com

Here are some of the materials I obtained from other websites:

Candles made of pure beeswax have well documented anti-allergic properties. Are you bothered by tree pollen, mold spores, or dust? These nefarious particles are positively charged and conduct static electricity. Allergy sufferers are encouraged to close the windows of their house and light a pure beeswax candle. The all-natural wax emits negatively charged vapors that will IONIZE the air. Burning beeswax candles liberates the air of positively charged allergens as it emits negatively charged vapors into the atmosphere. Try it…it works!
(source: http://healthmad.com/health/beeswax-candles-are-better-for-your-health/)

Negative ions are drawn to positive ions.  Positive ions hold on to airborne things like dust, mold and odors; the negative ions latch on to the “contaminated” positive ions and weigh them down this causes the contaminated positive ions to fall to the ground thereby cleaning and purifying the air. A perfect example of this phenomenon is rainstorms. A rainstorm is a negative ionic event, which is why we say the air smells so fresh after a rainstorm.

So go ahead and light a beeswax candle now.

Handmade: Baby Wax Gift Ideas

Dear Readers,
I have revamped and created a new blog. For readers interested to follow my postings, please visit http://zchicchick.blogspot.com/
Thank you for your support.

I just came up with this range last weekend.

Don't they look oh-so-adorable??

If I knew how to make these during lil' muachi's full moon or 1 year old birthday party, I would have given it away as party favors.

For more write-up on these candles and how to use them as wax tarts; do read my earlier post
http://muachiandme.blogspot.com/2013/06/handmade-lmm-angry-birds-wax-gift-ideas.html

In this post, I want to share another function of this creation of mine.

If you have read the earlier post, you would know that the pieces can be lifted from the candle base. Now apart from using it as a wax melt, you can also use this as a "mothball"! It may not actually repel moths but it will definitely repel certain insects (due to its essential oil content).

The best part about this is, it's heaps friendlier than a mothball. It does not contain any chemicals.

I've used it in the garden and it has definitely kept the ants at bay.

If you have kids and pets around, these little wax wonders are excellent. Non-toxic, smells great, looks great and repel insects.

However, please do still wash the little hands should they play with the wax pieces.

Here's my little model checking them out.

Handmade: LMM Angry Birds Wax Gift Ideas

I have been busy experimenting and am now ready to feature this wax creation in my blog.

Riding on the popularity of these little birdies ...Introducing my Angry Birds wax collection.

My candles are made of palm wax which has that natural crystalized look. They are friendlier than paraffin and burns for much longer as they have a higher melting point.

They work as insect repellents as they each contain pure Citronella essential oil.

Great as Wedding Favors, Party favors, Full Moon Giftpacks, or just to light around the house

With so much of mozzies problem these days, why spray toxic when you can light a candle?

Here's the special twist to these candles, it's a two-in-one product : You can easily remove the angry bird from the candle base and use it separately as a wax melt!
(You can still lit the candle base in foil on its own, just make sure the wick is trimmed nearer to the candle)

Just pop the wax melt into a burner and enjoy!
(For those not familiar with wax melt; instead of essential oil, you replace it with the wax melt)

Check out the melting Angry Bird...

The beauty of a wax melt is that it is in a way mess free. For easy removal, the remaining will cool off and turn back into wax. You just need to scrape it off the burner.

For myself, I would add pure citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus oil to my wax melt. They smell fantastic and repel mosquitoes. I can easily pop this pre-mix wax melt onto my burner without juggling several bottles of essential oil.  Pretty convenient while juggling lil' muachi.

In case of any accidents, at least I know that on cool surfaces, the melt will harden back into wax  quite fast.

I know.. They are awesome.

ReliaDose: To administer Medicine (syrup)

I am sure a number of people are not aware of this invention either.

Did you know they have a customized baby bottle to help you feed syrup medicine to your bubs?

I have one called ReliaDose. It is actually a baby bottle but with a slot for syringe insertion.

LMM baby steps:
1) There are 5 components altogether. It's really quite easy.

2) Insert 1 into 2 as how you would assemble any baby bottles top

3) Fill 3 with the required dosage of syrup medication
4) Insert 3 into 4

5) Fill 4 with milk or juice (liquid that your bub fancies)
6) Twist 2 onto 4 to close the bottle

LMM advice:
This product is great to monitor the intake of the medication. It also allows for mixing with the bub's fav drink so it hides its actual medicinal taste.

Hokkien Corner:
To save money, you can easily mix the medication into the drink. Most of the syrup medicine prescribed to lil' muachi mixes well with her milk. The only issue was if lil' muachi does not finish her milk. We solved that by giving her during her mealtimes. The nice tasting medicine, lil' muachi takes it orally directly from the syringe.

The ReliaDose only worked a few times on lil' muachi before she refused to drink from the bottle. It is still built a bit differently from the usual milk bottles.

If you don't have a fussy baby and would like to really monitor the intake of meds, this is a great product to have.

Tupperware (sponsored post): Twinkle Bowls

Dear Readers,
I have revamped and created a new blog. For readers interested to follow my postings, please visit http://zchicchick.blogspot.com/
Thank you for your support.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Apart from the twinkle tumbler (refer to April post), we are also liking the new Tupperware twinkle bowl sets.

They come in two sizes. The smaller Twinkle Easy Grip and the bigger Twinkle Feeding Bowl.

Here comes the unique twist.

Tupperware also provides a spoon that you can leave in the bowl and not worry about it slipping in!

The Twinkle Easy Grip is lil' muachi's current fav. She can easily hold the bowl on her own.

The bigger 430ml bowl is really handy as a bowl cum plate. Think baby food like porridge. It holds it in and cools down a lot faster in the Twinkle feeding bowl.
The best part is it comes with its own lid.

Tupperware also has a set of kid's utensils which is perfect for little hands.

It comes in a red shade which would attract any kid. This fork and spoon combo is ideal for travelling as well as it comes in its own casing.

Go ahead and mix and match the set.

Lil 'muachi is having heaps of fun with them. It encourages her to feed herself. And for me, at least I know it's Tupperware safe.

Tupperware (sponsored post): Twinkle Straw Tumbler

Dear Readers,
I have revamped and created a new blog. For readers interested to follow my postings, please visit http://zchicchick.blogspot.com/
Thank you for your support.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I was recently invited to be a mummy blogger for Tupperware's new kids' range! You can imagine my excitement. I mean not only do we get to be the first few to try their kids products; this is TuPpErWare. From childhood, I've heard that they last forever.

Lil' Muachi is now officially a Tupperware kid.

In this post, I will review the current favorite of lil' muachi's that comes from the Twinkle Kidz Set (18-36 months)

Pre-Tupperware era, I bought lil' muachi two tumblers with her favorite cartoon characters. In Malaysia, it is quite difficult to find decent ones with straws. I bought the Minnie tumbler in Robinsons and the Barney tumbler at the airport.

They are both tumblers with the flip cover to access the straw. The red one was difficult to flip after a while.

AND it only dropped one time for the bottom crack.

Introducing the Twinkle Straw Tumbler!!  Lets call it TST for short

You have no idea how happy I am that Tupperware invited me to review their products. This cant get any easier...

Apart from the fact that they are durable, they are practical and the colors are great. You have to feel it to know what sets Tupperware apart from the rest . Lil muachi has dropped this one a few times and it is still one whole piece.

Trust me. The lid is fantastic. Not only does it have a friendly grip on top, it slides up and down so smooth that you will also want to take a sip from it.

Now check this out. Can you see how the Tupperware people secured the straw to the top? Look at how firm and straight the straw is compared to the other tumbler.

AND that's not all, the TST comes with its own straw brush for cleaning! How mind blowing is this? Now you know why I am so psyched about reviewing for Tupperware Twinkle set. It practically sells itself.

However, the TST does not come with a strap but it comes with a swanky handle which is very friendly for toddlers.  You can have it with or without the handle; your choice.

There you have it. the Twinkle Straw Tumbler.

LMM Advice: I would invest in the TST for durability. It is really user friendly (not to mention the straw brush). And you can easily store it in your handbag. I have personally stored it in mine and there has not been any spills. Check out the measurements on the TST. You may wonder why you need it. For me, it has been very useful as I can monitor how much lil' muachi drinks in a day. You and I know that water is important to keep the bubs hydrated. They actually sip less that you think. Dehydration will lead to other complications like constipation. So be sure to keep your child hydrated.

So there you have it. Lil' Muachi's favorite tumbler at the moment.

We have taken it to Bangkok recently. Check it out....

Jotting down Bub's Height

I never really thought about marking lil' muachi's height as she grows up.

I mean I've seen it in movies where people pencil marked their walls as their kid grows taller. Mostly, I've seen them having to move out from their childhood homes and their markings being painted over or knocked down.

I was lucky enough to have received a foam made measuring ruler when lil' muachi came along. The ruler itself looks like a kid decor.

But most importantly, I can keep jotting down her growth and take the ruler with us wherever we may go.

I don't know what or how the ruler with markings will do for us in future.

But I am having fun dating down lil' muachi's growth. And so is lil' muachi.

Vicks BabyBalsam

I know everyone is probably familiar with Vicks.

But did you know that the blue bottle VapoRub that we use is only for children aged 2 years and above?

For kids, Vicks has a pink cover bottle branded as BabyBalsam.

I have tried it on lil' muachi and it is definitely gentler. I would avoid using the Adult Vicks on young children. It is way too harsh on their skin.

Vicks is definitely great when your child has the flu. You just need to rub it on the little one's chest and back; and hopefully the Vicks formula will provide some nasal relief.

However, Lil' muachi's favorite is still the "asian oil" (pic as below).

You can read more about it in my earlier post:

freezer bags: for breastmilk

Being a first time mum, there was a lot of things I didn't know existed especially when it comes to milk pumping.

For those of you who are as lost as I used to be, after you pump, there must be somewhere or something you can store your breast milk in.

Introducing the freezer bags.

There are a variety of freezer bags out there. But all the bags follow these simple steps:

LMM baby steps:
1) Pump into a bottle (some bags can be attached to the pump so the milk goes directly into the bag)
2) Pour milk from bottle into bag
3) Lock it so the milk does not spill out
4) Place in freezer
To use milk
1) Defrost bag by soaking it in hot water
2) When milk is fully thawed and warm, transfer to bottle

Things to Note:
1) Always wash your hands before you pump to ensure clean hands while transferring milk
2) Never place freezer bags in microwave for heating
3) Never mix milk from different pump sessions unless milk is already frozen and you are topping up. I recommend to just stick to a new bag
4) The measurements on the bag is to give you a better idea on how much to defrost for bub. Use that. Defrosted milk should never be thrown back into the freezer. Breast milk IS like gold. You do not want to waste it. Mums would understand this. It is NOT a walk in the park when we  wake up in the middle of our sleep just to pump.
5) Always freeze the bags in a compartment of their own OR at the back of the freezer.
6) I personally won't freeze the milk for longer than 6 months. 3 months was what I went with.

The pic on top shows the type of bag that requires a "strip lock". After you transfer the milk, you will use this clip to push down any milk at the top and remove air. The strip is then placed at the top of the milk. You roll the clip with the bag until the milk, then you fold the strip across the bag to lock it. I assume this type is the older "model".

There are now ziplock bags which makes it super easy. You just need to transfer the milk and zip it up. There are also a place where you can jot down the dates on when it was pumped. Also, these bags has a base at the bottom (it opens up a bit at the bottom). This is good as it helps the bag to stand in the freezer.

LMM advice: I would go with a bag that is easy to lock and has a base at the bottom. The base help the bag stand proper in the freezer so it's easier to store and organize. The bags are fairly cheap. So go with convenience. The whole process of breast pumping is already exhausting enough to have to juggle freezer bags as well.

Here's the top three things to look out for when buying a freezer bag:
1) Base for easy storing
2) Easy locking of bag
3) Space to Jot down dates for monitoring

Hokkien Corner: I read that freezing breast milk will kill some of its antibodies. But it is still heaps better than formula milk. Guess that is why all mothers do it. Not to mention how expensive formulas are these days! I would invest in good freezer bags or even bottles for breast milk storing. I have not used milk bottles for freezing but I know some mothers have.

I know it's tiresome but it's not a permanent chore. So while you can, just try to enjoy it. Part and parcel of being a mum I guess. My breast pumping days are over but it has been an experience I have not forgotten.

Mesh Feeder

Mesh Feeders. What are they?

This interesting invention allows children to munch on fruits safely by eliminating the danger of choking.

LMM Baby Steps:
1) Have all the items ready

2) Loop the netting (item 1 which keeps the fruit inside) into item 2

3) Twist item 3 onto item 1+2 to lock the fruit in. I believe the gel like substance keeps the fruit cooler for longer. There is also a tiny lock which keeps the handle fastened to the netting.

4) All ready for your kid

LMM Advice: Apart from letting your little one try out new fruits, I read that you can use this little gadget as a teether as well. All you need to do is put ice cubes in it.

Mess Alert: When your kid uses the mesh feeder, be prepared to clean.

Lil' muachi is beginning to appreciate the mesh feeder a lot more now that she is teething and trying out new flavors. However, she would throw it or place it next to her when done. So any leftover banana or papaya stuck on the mesh will obviously transfer to any surface she has decided to leave it on. Obviously lil' muachi herself will also be messy.

Hokkien Corner: I don't really know how much this thing costs. I was lucky enough to inherit one from my sis-in-law. Lil' muachi's interest in the mesh is pretty short. She prefers to hold on to the actual papaya fruit and munch on it on her own. Even when she was smaller, she didnt exactly take to the mesh like the other kids in the pictures. I guess it's up to individual parents. If your bub seems to really enjoy munching on fruits and stuff but is still too young, go with the mesh. At least you know s/he will not choke with the netting security.
